Most of the time, people fail to appreciate the value of something until it's gone. Whether it's relationships, possessions, opportunities or even health, realizing their importance often dawns only after they have been lost or compromised. When you are used to having something, you assume it’ll always be there and eventually begin to overlook it. Why does this happen?
As Joseph B. Wirthlin said, “The more often we see the things around us - even the beautiful and wonderful things - the more they become invisible to us. That is why we often take for granted the beauty of this world: the flowers, the trees, the birds, the clouds - even those we love. Because we see things so often, we see them less and less.” We spend most of our time complaining about the things we don’t have instead of appreciating the things that we do have.
For example, once you grow old and your body is weaker than it used to be, you’ll likely find yourself wishing to feel like your younger self again. Ironically, during your younger years, all you wished for was to be older.
Another example would be drinking clean water, which is a privilege that people from more wealthy countries take for granted, while people from less fortunate countries pray often for this necessity. Think about this: the things you take for granted, someone else is praying for. Thus, appreciate what you have for those who lack the same privileges.
If you live in a country where it snows for Christmas, be grateful for it, as it allows you to experience the magic of a white Christmas while others can only dream of it.
You might not realize it now, but one day, you will look back and notice that the smallest things are the big things. It is the little things that make life so magical, and it is important to recognize their value.
Be appreciative of the people around you and the life that you have. This is something that my mom has always told me and that I now pass on to you. Be grateful because everything is temporary. Additionally, I believe acknowledging the blessings in your life will bring you joy and a sense of fulfillment. And, for those who are leaving Stanstead this year, enjoy the time you have left because even though you might be feeling overwhelmed and stressed right now, you will find yourself missing this place. I know I will.
